Okavango Delta

Overview

The Okavango River comes down from Angola. The flatness of the land in Botswana causes it to fan out into an inland delta covering an area of some 16,000 square kilometres. Your trip into the Okavango Delta should be regarded as much a cultural experience, as a wildlife one.

Info

The majority of the polers who will guide you in Okavango Delta and the people you will meet in this area are a mixture of baNoka and baYei. These people still live on corn, sorghum, melons; herding cattle and goats; fishing and hunting and gathering to supplement their livestock and agriculture. In the Okavango Delta, most camps offer both water and land activities but some are pure water and others are pure land camps.

The water camps in Okavango Delta focus on ‘mokoro’ (dug out canoe) trips in the waterways where there is not such an abundance of animals although buffalo, elephant, lechwe, the elusive Sitatunga and other animals do occur on the islands. Birdlife however is in great abundance, and you stand a good chance to sight Pel’s Fishing Owl, Slaty Egrets, Rufous-Bellied Heron, Wattled Cranes, Swamp Boubous, numerous eagles and vultures to keep any bird lover satisfied.
